How do we know when we have promises with other people in our lives?

Oh it is very clear to anyone that there be a promise at hand. There is always some work and some wonderful intense feelings or emotions. It would never be a blasé kind of relationship. It would be a smashing and thrashing or wonderful joy. It would be peaks and valleys. Intensity. There is a drive to complete. Even feeling compelled to stay away from one, there is often a promise there.

How can we best help our children?

By loving them. By being their guides. By not making their choices, but by speaking from the voice of love and knowing that they are not yours. There is no ownership. There is only guidance, as we do.
